Soundtrack from the Wildworks Theatre production of Souterrain
Director: Bill Mitchell
Musical Director: Adrian Freedman
In 2006-2007 WildWorks went on a journey with Souterrain that involved partnerships and performances in seven very different communities in Gosnay, Amiens, Sotteville-les-Rouen, Brighton, Hastings, Colchester and Cornwall.
Souterrain was based on the the story of Orpheus in the Underworld, and explored themes of love, loss and regeneration. These themes resonated with our host communities who had said goodbye to their traditional industries, their countries of birth, their memory. In each location the production was recreated and performed in a very different setting: A village, a school, a 17th century French convent, a Napoleonic citadel, a department store, an Alzheimers hospital and a disused mine.
The music weaves original material with traditional melodies of Cornwall and Japan, Sephardic odes of Sourthern Spain, dixieland and bebop jazz, Japanese Enka ballads and songs of Brazil.
The music was performed by a mix of professional and community musicians including a jazz trio, gospel choir, traditional musicians from Cornwall and France, brass bands and percussion ensembles.
