Under the Skin (Shakuhachi and Butoh Night)
April 3, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm¥2000
An evening of music and dance with butoh dancer Yurabe Masami at Space ALS-D in Kyoto
I collaborated on several butoh projects with Yurabe Masami in the period 1993 – 2000. This performance will be the first time for us to work together since then.
Yurabe is an extraordinary presence. Intense, graceful and other-worldly. Its a deep pleasure to have the opportunity to re-connect with him in this way.
The evening will start with Yurabe’s solo performance, followed by a solo shakuhachi section, and then we will perform together.
The performance will be followed by an open audience discussion with the artists, including refreshments
The door will open 18.00, with the performance start time at 18.30
Yurabe Masami was a founder member of the Butoh group Tōhōya-Sōkai. In 1982 he began his work as a solo performer. He has performed at dance festivals in Europe, Australia and Asia. In 2005-6 he directed the series of Dance and Performance workshops Reverse Side of the Body, with guest artists Kasai Akira and Ōno Yoshito. He has collaborated with Bunraku puppet classic shows. In 2008 he opened the performance centre Space ALS-D at Nishi-jin, Kyoto.
